Okay, we’ll admit it, we’re not\u00a0sticklers for traditions (wedding traditions or otherwise) here at WD. We love change and something a little different and when it comes to weddings we really believe to each their own. But, when it all comes to the end of the day, we do love some wedding traditions. They’re in weddings for a good reason: to pay respect to our generations before us, to have pride in our marriage and of course for good fun. So here are some traditions we never want to throw out:<\/p>\n
A nice tradition for luck, this can be lovely if the bride makes a big feature of it!<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething old\u201d represents the bride\u2019s connection to her family and the past. Brides often choose to wear a piece of jewellery from the family.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething new\u201d represents the future and new beginning. The wedding dress is the obvious choice!<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething borrowed\u201d usually comes from a happily married woman (a sister, friend or close relative) and is thought to send good fortune and joy to the bride.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething blue\u201d is a symbol of fidelity, and purity of the bride. Garters, blue ribbons on the bridal underwear or even blue shoes are ways of incorporating this ancient tradition.<\/p>\n
The bridal veil has long been a symbol of modesty and virginity and was believed to ward off evil. Today veils can add a sense of elegance and serenity to the wedding dress. They can have a beautiful vintage feel if done with the right dress. Even Jen Anniston thinks so, claiming she’ll definitely have one for her special day.\u00a0There are lots of wedding traditions and many of them we take for granted and don\u2019t even realize why we plan aspects of our weddings in certain ways!<\/p>\n
Tossing the bouquet is a tradition that we all enjoy at a wedding. In the past women used to try to rip pieces of the bride\u2019s dress and flowers thinking that the bride\u2019s luck would rub off on them. To escape this the bride used to throw the bouquet and run away. This is also why the \u201cgoing away\u201d part of the wedding is usually immediately after the \u201cTossing of the bouquet\u201d. Today the bouquet is tossed to all the single ladies (with Beyonce on in the background!) with the belief that whoever catches it will be the next to marry. No pressure on the lucky lady!<\/p>\n
